The question often sounded on my ears, every time my friend ask me… “I want to buy a new notebook, which do I choose, Windows or Mac OS X?” Well… I can’t give them an exact answer since everyone have their own needs.
So I ask them their needs, “what do you buy notebook for?” If you do lots of designing or editing video, then I might suggest you go for Mac. But if you just for daily productivity and gaming then Windows will be very suitable for you. That simple answer I always throw to someone who ask me that question ^^
But there are lots of other consideration beside the one I just explained. In this article I will comparing both OS. So after you read this article, you can make up your mind about both OS, and make the right choice.
* Windows version that I’m going to compare with OS X is Vista Ultimate version
Graphic User Interface (GUI)
![]()
![]()
Both offers nice quality GUI, especially their latest model, Windows Vista, and Mac OS X Leopard. But if you look closer you can see Mac desktop offers more features and modernization, such as viewing file inside the folder without have to open the folder itself, 3D Dock, etc.
Windows Explorer vs. OS X Finder
In term of managing information display interface on its built-in file manager software (Windows Explorer), Vista has improved much-much better if compared to XP, on the bottom you can see complete information according to file you choose, from it’s name, size, picture, date taken, etc. But if you look at Mac, you can choose 4 kinds of display, they are, Cover flow mode, Column mode, List mode, and Icon mode. The one that I like the most is Cover flow mode. For Windows user, if you choose to use iTunes as your media player, you can see how cover flow works, it is so cool. Again here, Mac Finder give you more attractive display to show off your files.
Windows Media Center vs. OS X Front Row
![]()
Very tough fight between these 2 media center from both OS, in one side Windows Media Center offer more complete features but on the other side offers more smooth operations. When you close the application you can differentiate between these 2 Media Center. Front Row, by far the best media center I ever experienced.
Windows Search vs. OS X Spotlight

Windows already improved much on its latest model, VISTA, I starting to like searching something using Instant searching in Vista. But Spotlight in Mac already implemented this kind of search method before Leopard (their new OS). So I guess now their even in this battle.
Window Media Player vs. iTunes

Both Media Players offer quite the same feature, you can play your favorite MP3 songs, listen to the radio, connect your favorite MP3 player Zune for Windows, and iPhone or iPod for Mac. This is a neck to neck battle between the two candidates.
Internet Explorer vs. Safari
Personally I don’t like both IE and Safari. But if I have to choose, I prefer Safari. I like the font (Lucida Grande if I’m not mistaken). From the speed of browsing, both offers same amount of speed.
Uninstalling Software
Method implemented for Windows doesn’t really much changed from its predecessor Windows XP. You have to find .exe to install and find uninstall.exe to uninstall (or by going to control panel > add remove program), they just add some security tools in Vista when you try to remove some important files. Compare to Mac, even though you have to use application like AppZapper, but their offer more interactive install/uninstalling process (Drag and Drop style). But again Mac doesn’t have any build-in Uninstaller, if you want to purchase AppZapper uninstaller for $12.95 or get a free uninstaller called AppCleaner. So… I think Windows wins this battle of uninstalling process.
Windows Back Up vs. OS X Time Machine
Now going to the last part and the most I like is the back up style for both OS. Windows has again doesn’t improve much from last version. Still use the same method and people tend to disable this feature because too much resources used and make their PC slow. And in case of Crash happened you can go back only to Last known Good Configuration. But not for Mac Time Machine, beside their gave good interactive display, you can also choose what date you want to “travel back“. You should try it yourself though, to feel the coolest back up method ever created.
Ok, I guess those 8 comparisons can made up your mind now, so which one do you choose? Windows or Mac OS X
